Why not escape the winter blues and enjoy a longer break in Gascony, a healthy, beautiful and delicious corner of South West France…
With local lockdowns popping up around the UK, now is the perfect time to take a longer break over what is looking likely to be a long winter. With its low population, rolling, open countryside, delicious local cuisine and fantastic culture, Gascony really is the perfect bolthole for a prolonged winter break, whether you’re looking to stay as a family or a group of friends.
Known for centuries as the land of 'Bien-Etre' ('well-being'), Gascony is a particularly good choice of location in these health-conscious times. With very low population density and practically no pollution, Gascony’s relaxed, stress-free, healthy, open-air lifestyle and warm climate make it ideal for your winter break. The region’s 'departement' of 'Le Gers', which covers most of Gascony, fortunately has had one of the lowest Covid-19 infection rates in France, with very few serious cases, while France generally has an excellent public health service, which is as available for visitors as for locals.
We currently have six properties available for longer winter breaks below, with rental periods ranging from a minimum of one month to a maximum of six. Rents are negotiable depending on length of rental and number of guests in the party – you don’t have to fill the property!
Six properties available as long term winter rentals in Gascony, South West France:
Chateau St Amand is a very elegant 18th century single-storey chateau which feels more like a fine Roman Villa than a medieval castle! The accommodation in the house is superb with a beautiful library. The house stands in its own land on a hill above the quiet hamlet of St Amand, yet only 3kms from the charming market town of Eauze, an historic centre for Armagnac making.
The main holiday rental property at Chateau de Poudenas is called 'Le Bastion du Prince Noir', to commemorate the siege of the castle by Edward, The Black Prince. The Counts of Poudenas are justifiably proud of their famous victory, and named their guest house after the Prince because it is built into one of the 'Bastions', massive stone fortifications in the perimeter wall, that defied the Prince's siege. The 'Bastion' is now a very attractive, comfortable, well-equipped stone-built house with shuttered windows and private garden and swimming pool.
Domaine de Pignoulet is a very handsome, well-proportioned late C18th Maison de Maitre - or 'principal house' of the area. Built two hundred years ago as part of what was once a prosperous farm, this interesting and spacious house has been very sympathetically restored by the present owners. The property lies just off a quiet lane on the edge of a small, peaceful village set in traditional farmland, and is well-protected by its outbuildings and a walled garden.
Puissentut is a beautiful property in the heart of rolling Gascon countryside. Within easy reach of a pretty village with boulangerie, post office and restaurant, and only 10 minutes' drive to the local market town - this is an ideal place to enjoy the gentle pace of life in rural France.
The present owners of Hourtiquet have transformed an early C19 Gascon farmhouse and attached older farm buildings into a stylish, charming, comfortable and well-equipped home, forming two sides of the central courtyard. Facing South East towards the Pyrenees, the courtyard is very private and secluded, and can be made completely secure for small children.
Chateau Pélat is one of the most fascinating properties we represent – historic, romantic, comfortable and civilised, with swimming pool, tennis court, dining terraces and wide grass areas bordered by shady old trees…perfect for a large family or group of friends.
