Things To Do In Gascony

The beautiful, unspoilt countryside of rolling hills and valleys of Gascony offer everyone the opportunity to enjoy an active holiday at your own pace. To help you make the most of your time in Gascony, we are very happy to provide you with information on what’s happening in the region.

And starting in 2022, we now have a network of Working Partners. These are local Gascon businesses which help us to provide our guests with a customised personal service and a wide range of holiday opportunities and experiences.

Variety is the spice of Gascony – there is something to offer everyone and all ages - from visits to châteaux and cathedrals, to food markets and water sports, from jazz festivals to salsa events, from wine and garlic festivals to car boot sales, from antique fairs to village fêtes and night markets…the following is a selection of things you could choose to do and see during your holiday.

Bike Hire/Cycling Tours.

Gascony is brilliant for biking! As well as the rolling, open, rural landscape, with good country roads with very little traffic, there is a variety of terrain to suit all abilities, ancient villages and market towns for a light refreshment stop or to look at some wonderful architecture...some of the biking circuits include parts of the 1000-year-old pilgrim routes that eventually lead to Santiago de Compostela in Spain.

For top quality electric bike hire we work with e-Velo (Working Partner) which provides electric bikes delivered to your holiday home.

For informative and enjoyable bike tours (wine-tasting or architecture) we work with Gascogne Bike Hire (Working Partner)

WALKING

People love walking in Gascony! It’s partly the lovely unspoilt countryside, with endless rolling hills and wooded valleys, very low population density, welcoming local people, wonderful star-lit night skies, and on a clear day you will see the majestic snow-capped Pyrenees mountains all along the Southern horizon. There is little noise and virtually no air or light pollution – creating a clear, luminous quality of light enjoyed by painters and photographers. But it’s also the historical resonance of the

the 1000-year-old pilgrim routes that start out all over Europe, then cross through Gascony and over the Pyrenees eventually leading to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. People are still walking these routes today as they have for a thousand years. And these pilgrims have influenced greatly the art and architecture you will find in hundreds of villages, market towns and small cities in Gascony. https://www.outdooractive.com/en/pilgrim-walks/gers/pilgrim-walks-in-gers/3603851/

Pyrenees trekking

Our Working Partner ‘Pyrenees Mountains 2 Mediterranean’ offer the opportunity to explore the extraordinary diversity & natural riches to be found in an ever-changing landscape as the Pyrenees march majestically towards the crystal-clear blue waters

of the Mediterranean. High mountain trekking combined with birdwatching and (if you want!) wild camping!

Gastronomy

Gascony is renowned for its gastronomic quality, from traditional regional specialities such as cassoulet, duck confit, and pâté de foie gras, to excellent local vin de pays and world-famous Armagnac. If you would like to learn how to cook these local recipes yourself, we will introduce you to Atelier Cuisine (Working Partner) who can explain to you the locally sourced ingredients in Gascon markets, or arrange cooking workshops, or prepare complete meals with you – or do all three!

Cruise the Canal de la Garonne
(connects to the Canal du Midi)

Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the canal was originally built to serve as a short cut between the Atlantic and Mediterranean oceans in the late 17th Century. 240km in length, the canal is divided into the Canal de la Garonne from Bordeaux to Toulouse, and the Canal du Midi, between Toulouse and Sete. You can hire a boat and boatman for a day, enjoy a leisurely lunch on board and experience the rare peace and tranquillity of this ancient waterway.

Horse Riding

If you are passionate about horses, you're in for a treat! The choice is excellent and the choice is yours - from riding lessons to guided treks on horseback. Or you can even rent a horse-drawn caravan and spend a day meandering along quiet country roads, pausing to enjoy a picnic or perhaps a spot of fishing. https://www.guide-du-gers.com/en/tourism/entertainment/outside-sport-activities/equestrian-centres.html

Accrobranche

For the more energetic among you, we can recommend (because we have done it!) an unforgettable afternoon in 300 acres of woodland at http://www.levertenlair.com/. Secured by ropes and guided by sure-handed professionals, this activity of Accrobranche allows you to release your inner Tarzan (or Jane) by swinging among the trees, crossing hanging bridges and negotiating obstacles suspended in mid-air.

Relaxation

Experience the historic natural thermal baths in Lectoure or Castera-Verduzan, perhaps as part of a visit to the weekly market. If you prefer to be pampered in situ, we can arrange for a qualified beauty therapist and masseuse to visit you at the house for massage, manicure, and facials. Why not treat yourself - you're on holiday! https://www.valvital.fr/Nos-stations-thermales/Lectoure-Station-thermale-de-Lectoure
